RULES

GENERAL
Questions will be read over the KVCU Radio 1190 AM, broadcast and webcast at the top (:00) and bottom (:30) of the hour each hour for 24 hours, which are also posted on a website, and emailed to participants, who must return the answers by the end of the hour that the questions are announced, via email to (depending on the Group you are assigned to):

The groups are made for contest management purposes only - all groups get the same questions at the same time.

The alternative to Email is to FAX your answers back to 630 566 3774 or 303 492 4198 (day of event only!). There will be 10 questions at the top of the hour on general pop culture topics valued from 1 to 10 points, increasing in difficulty. One question from the general topic group, either the 9 or 10 point question, will be an audio identification. There will be 9 questions at the bottom of the hour on a previously announced (via email and posting) specific topic, with question values from 1 to 9 points. Total of 100 points available each hour - 2500 for the entire competition (the last hour has double point values). Teams get pledges for donations to charity based upon points scored. Teams are eligible for door prizes and top score prizes every hour of competition. There also will be larger prizes available for the overall marathon, selected by teams in order based upon the amount of donations multiplied by the number of points scored (see AWARDS).

Questions: The format for questions in the would be in two sets, with one set of 10 questions given at the top of the hour, which will be general trivia among the categories of music, television, sports, film, and misc. that includes general knowledge, literature, theatre, advertising, and other popular culture areas. A second set of 9 questions in these areas will be given at the bottom of the hour that covered all of the category areas, but that were related to a theme (similar to Jeopardy!), such as "Ireland" or "Batman" or "The 1950's" or "The Letter M", or "Politics", etc. Teams will be told at least one week before competition begins what the hourly topics were going to be so they could "plan" appropriately. The general questions would have one question each with a value of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 points, and the hourly them topics would have one question each with a value of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 points. Thus there would be 100 points available in any given hour of competition. Over the course of the day, the questions would be planned such that the total value of points for sports, television, music, and misc would each provide 20% of the available points, for a total of 2500, (the last hour will be double points). Partial credit would be given for questions with multiple parts, so perhaps you would have a 3 part question for 9 points, and each response would be worth 3 points HOWEVER the questions will increase in difficulty for the amount of points awarded for the question. Questions will be posted on an internet website, emailed, and read on KVCU radio station for broadcast and webcast.

Answers: The format for answers will be in written form via email, posting on website forms database, fax, telegram, carrier pigeon, or any other means that get to the contest headquarters by the end of the hour that the questions are asked. Answers can be only submitted ONCE for each question. The answers must be RECEIVED by the end of the hour time frame. The only phone calls that will be accepted are to confirm receipt of the answers at 303 520 0200 (or disputes on scoring or answers), not for teams to provide answers. If answers are received by email, a confirmation of receipt will be returned by email, however, timestamps on email being sent will NOT be accepted for submission verification, as any form of communication must be RECEIVED by the end of the hour timeframe - teams may call to confirm receipt (303 520 0200). Teams may submit ALL the questions at once, or as one partial set for ALL the general questions, and another partial set for ALL the specific topic questions. Teams MAY NOT submit questions in smaller sets unless they are choosing not to provide an answer to the other questions posed in that set. Thus, teams have 1 hour minus transmission and possible confirmation time to submit answers to the general questions for that hour, and 30 minutes minus transmission and possible confirmation time to submit their answers to the specific topic questions.

ANSWERS (continued): Depending on resources for fax, internet bandwidth, telephone, etc. at contest headquarters there will be peak times where teams may not be able to get through to submit answers or confirm receipt, so teams may need to consider submitting answers at times other than the peak to ensure receipt, or to arrange for alternative methods to get their questions to the headquarters. This may require teams to submit answers earlier rather than later, but teams can only submit a maximum of two groups of answers. Phonetic spelling is acceptable for answers, but abbreviations, acronyms, or initials are not acceptable. Examples - acceptable: ABRAHAM LINKCUN, (not acceptable: A. Scoring: The scores will be tabulated, and scores along with answers will posted on an internet website (to be provided to teams at the time of competition), emailed to team captains, and announced on the radio ninety minutes after the end of the specific hour of competition. There will be no updates until the awards ceremony for the final two hours of competition, which will occur two hours after competition ends. Score protests will be accepted through the same means for submitting questions. There will be a one hour window for receipt of protests, and all protests for a given hour must be submitted at the same time in one set associated with one set of hourly questions. Answers for the final two hours will be posted on an internet website, emailed to team captains and announced on the radio at the end of the contest, and there will be a one hour protest period for those two hours. The only phone calls accepted for protests will be to confirm receipt at 303 520 0200. Teams will be encouraged NOT to share answers, as the team with the top point score for a given hour will get a 10 point bonus towards the overall competition. If two teams are tied at the end of the hour, no bonus will be offered, and any prize will roll over to the next hour. The decision of the judges is final.

Awards:

  1. Teams are eligible for prizes equal to double the amount of DONTATIONS received. Donations include the $25 team fee, 50% of t-shirt purchases, and 25% of purchases at http://www.gourmetmarket.com, and any pledges that the teams get for their performance. Teams are encouraged to get pledges from family, friends, and associates that will boost their eligibility for the larger overall prizes. Pledges may be paid by check or credit card before the contest begins, and pledges paid during the contest must be made by credit card by calling 303 520 0200 or fax to 630 566 3774. All donations are tax deductible - (note the limits of deductibility for purchases of 50% for t-shirts and 25% for gourmetmarket.com). Thus a team with a $25 registration fee, $20 in T-shirt purchases, $40 in purchases at gourmetmarket.com, and $250 in pledges would be eligible for (25+10+10+250) x 2 = $590 in prizes. Again, pledges need not be from team members, they can be from anyone that will donate to the AIDS charities and receive a 100% tax deduction for the amount. All donations are non-refundable and must be paid in full before or during the contest.

  2. There will be a small door prize for the top score for each hour (estimated value - $10 to $20). Any team that scores at least one point during the hour will be eligible for the door prize. Total 24 prizes for estimated value of $360 - teams may win a maximum of one door prize during the entire event.
  3. There will also be a prize among the team that scores the most points each hour of competition. (estimated value ($20 to $30) total 24 prizes for estimated value of $600. Teams may win a maximum of 5 hourly prizes. Their points will still accrue for the overall prizes, but in the event a team wins an hour and has already won 5 hourly prizes, the second place team that hour will win the prize, unless it has already won 5 hourly prizes, in which case it will transfer to the third place team, etc.
  4. There will be plaques for first, second and third place overall, and for the team that overall scores the most in the Film, Music, Sports, and Television categories.
  5. The overall prizes will be arranged by value, and the team with the top overall score multiplied by the amount of dollars donated will be allowed to select up to 5 prizes from the showcase. To select a prize or group of prizes, the team may multiply by 2 the amount of registration fees and other fully paid donations (plus a percentage of purchases) that have been received by contest headquarters as indicated in item 1. above, and select up to that amount in total dollar value. The top team may select less than 5 prizes as long as the dollar value limit is not exceeded. The second place team in terms of points times dollars donated then selects up to 4 prizes, the Third place team up to 3 prizes, Fourth Place up to 2 prizes, and Fifth place and lower teams select one prize each until the prize pool is exhausted.
